Exeter High To Celebrate NH Food Day

The school invites families to learn about local food.

Exeter High School will celebrate "Food Day in New Hampshire" next week with a bunch of events focused on promoting local food.

The school recently established a community garden and has been using local food from farms like Apple Annie, Brookford Farm and White Birch Farm for its lunch menu.

On Fri., Oct. 28, families are invited to learn how to make a harvest dinner featuring local chefs who will help families prepare a butternut apple soup, shepherd’s pie, and an apple dessert. The dinner is at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person. For more information, call the school district at 603-775-8400

On Wed., Oct. 26, the school will screen the movie "Greenhorns," a short documentary which explores the young farming community.

“We’ve been using food from the community garden since August, and also buying local food for the lunch menu,” said Jeanne Pierce, director of food services for the school district.  “We love going outside and picking fresh tomatoes and carrots and serving them to the kids. We hope the garden continues to expand.”

Gov. John Lynch issued an official proclamation designating Oct. 24 as "Food Day in New Hampshire," urging all citizens to participate in local food activities.

The day also coincides with National Food Day.
