Crews demolish the Exeter Area Junior High School.

The old Exeter Area Junior High School building has been torn down.

Crews have been demolishing the building, located at 56 Linden St., to make way for a new YMCA center. The demolition is expected to be completed by mid-February.

The Southern District YMCA purchased the 10-acre property and plans to build a new community center with a pool, gym, and indoor track. There will also be room for child care, youth, and senior services, among other features. Town officials approved the project earlier this year.

The YMCA group is currently putting together a capital campaign to raise money for construction.

School and town officials last month held a ceremony recognizing the junior high's 45 years of existence.

I had two children who went to Exeter Jr.High and carry fond memories of the teachers and other students. Their children and all members of this family young and old will have the same opportunity for good memories with the new YMCA for years to come. Can't think of a better boost to the community!
