Exeter's Hassan Jabs NH GOP, Again

The gubernatorial candidate also has a new challenger.

“It is hard for me to express how distressed I am about what is happening right now in the Bill O’Brien legislature,” said Democrat Maggie Hassan yesterday in Amherst.

Hassan, of Exeter, spoke to the Amherst Democratic Town Committee. She continued to pull no punches when it comes to Republican lawmakers – especially House Speaker Bill O'Brien.

“He has gone after environmental protection, women’s rights and civil rights in numerous ways,” she said.

Hassan, a former state senator who served as majority leader, her candidacy last month. She called some Republican lawmakers "extremists" for their policies, prompting a from House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt

Hassan is up against Ovide Lamontagne and Kevin Smith, who his bid for governor today.

Hassan yesterday spoke about expanding gambling – which currently Gov. John Lynch .

“It would give us a sliver of revenue in a steady way, but we have to be realistic on what the trade-offs are,” she said.

Despite her staunch opposition to Republican legislators, she said she is willing to work with them.

“If you want to get things done, you have to get some other people in the party to join you,” she said. “You may have a different political philosophy, but they are human beings.”
