Exeter Treasurer to Leave After 30+ Years

He was lauded for his service.

Town Treasurer Don Brabant will leave his position after more than 30 years of service.

Brabant has been planning a wedding and is moving to Portsmouth. He had to resign as treasurer because the holder of that job must be an Exeter resident, according to town regulations.

Brabant's last day will be June 30. He started as treasuer nearly 33 years ago on Oct. 2, 1979 when he took over for Homer Snell.

Brabant also has to leave his spot on Exeter's Budget Recommendations Committee.

“I’ve truly enjoyed working with Don," Town Manager Russ Dean said in a statement today. "He was tough, opinionated, but always fair and willing to listen.

"He supported the mission and cared deeply about the Town. His record speaks for itself. He’s been so involved in a number of significant things and has always offered his assistance when it was needed. I’m grateful to Don for all he did over the years for Exeter. It is going to be hard to see him leave.”

Brabant recently retired from his job at Citizens Bank in January 2012.

Over the years, Brabant helped lead a number of initiatives financial initiatives in Exeter, including recommending adopting semi-annual tax billing, serving on the water and sewer advisory committee, assisting with economic development of Industrial Drive in the 1970s, and most recently serving as chair of the Budget Recommendations Committee.

Selectmen will need appoint a replacement for Brabant.

Dean is accepting applications for the treasurer job, which is a part-time elected position with a salary of $8,864 a year. Inquiries can be made to Dean at rdean@town.exeter.nh.us.
