Henderson-Swasey Trails.

It's easy to miss the Henderson-Swasey trail network.

A small dirt road just north of the Public Works Department on Newfields Road leads to a parking lot for the trails, which are perfect for walking a dog, going for a trail run, or snowshoeing. There are several loops that are up to two miles long.

The area was established through donations and is maintained by the Exeter Conservation Commission.

Thank you for the nice video. What is the length of the trail? Are the various loops marked with blazes or signs? Also, are there places to picnic along the way...lookouts or clearings or any bodies of water? Is hunting allowed in this area in season? And where can we find a map? :)

Hey Jane. The trail is a several miles. Orange marks on trees mark the trails. There aren't any picnic tables but I suppose you could find some rock areas to sit on. There aren't any lookouts. There's a map at the trailhead.

Lots of questions...there is more than one trail; yes thery are blazed. Maps of HS and the Oaklands can be downloaded from Exeter town website. No hunting is allowed and dogs must be on leashes, Enjoy...
Check out Conservation site more more details.

Hey Mikki, It's a pretty cool place. The entrance is just across from the Public Works Department near a railroad overpass. You can also walk dogs here.

Hi Jason,
I've been hoping for the answers to my questions in a previous post (see above, September 2nd). Before hiking the trail, I would like to know if hunters are allowed in the area, as they are in some other public areas in Exeter. (It would be good to know if hikers should wear blaze orange.) And since hikers were lost there just yesterday, can you tell us if (aside from, the obvious path in the video) there are blazes to mark the trails? And what is the length of the trail? Thanks!

Sorry Jason, I see that I overlooked your answers to my questions! But can't see how to delete that last post. I do still have one question, though, about hunters. This is a concern of mine -- a safety issue -- since I know that hunters are allowed in some public conservation areas. If you can find this out for the public, it's important information to have. Thanks again! Keep up the good work.

Hi Jane, No problem -- hunting isn't allowed at Henderson-Swasey. Hunting is only allowed in Exeter at Raynes Farm, the Little River Conservation Area, the Smith-Page Conservation Area, and the Oaklands Town Forest during the appropriate seasons.

Great -- that's really good to know. And thank you for listing the places where it is allowed. Please write more items about public spaces! :)
