Pro-Choice EMILY's List Endorses Hassan

EMILY's List, a national pro-choice women's political action committee with deep pockets, today endorsed Maggie Hassan for governor of New Hampshire.

Hassan, of Exeter, is vying for the Democratic nomination for governor. She previously served as a state senator.

“While tates across the country – including New Hampshire – face the challenges of a tough economy and attacks on women’s health from radical Republican legislatures, our country is at risk of having no female Democratic governors in office at the start of 2013," the organization said in a statement. "Now, more than ever, our states need the leadership of strong, pro-choice Democratic women like Maggie Hassan."

EMILY is an acronym that stands for "Early Money Is Like Yeast." The organization has given more than $86 million to the campaigns of pro-choice female candidates to help get them elected. It operates on the philsophy that giving money to candidates early in their campaigns will help them reel in more money as Election Day approaches.

As of early this month, EMILY's List had not given money to Hassan's campaign, according to OpenSecrets.org, a group that tracks money in politics. EMILY's List this year has given more than $300,000 to the campaign of Elizabeth Warren, who's running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

Hassan is going up against Barrington's Jackie Cilley and Danbury's Bill Kennedy for the Democratic nomination for governor. The Primary is in September.

Hassan has against lawmakers' attempts to reform birth control coverage for women and this weekend in a rally to fire up the female electorate.
