Registration for adults who dropped out of high school but who would now like to complete their diplomas has begun. Interested adults should call the Adult Education office at 775-8457 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Tuck Learning Center (former Exeter High School). Classes begin Monday, January 28, and you must have an individual registration appointment with the program director to review transcripts to determine credit status, by January 24, so don’t delay—call now. The program is open to all adult residents of the greater Seacoast area and Rockingham County.
An Exeter Adult High School Diploma is granted to those adults who complete requirements similar to those fulfilled by high school students. Courses in English, math, computer, science, and social studies are required, but the remaining electives may be chosen by the students. Courses and credits completed while in high school will be applied towards the adult diploma. In addition, older adults may qualify for military and work experience credits.
The Diploma Program began in Exeter in 1984. More than five hundred adults have received their diplomas through this program. Furthermore, hundreds of area high school students who had fallen behind in their credits have taken courses through this program that enabled them to graduate on time with their classes. Exeter Adult Education graduates find opportunities to attend college or to obtain a better paying job more extensive because of earning their diplomas. Even GED graduates return to get their diploma because they feel they need more classroom experience before going to college.
The selection of courses this semester includes: Mondays—Chemistry, US History-20th Century, Project Math, and Critical Skills in English. Tuesdays—Foundations of Math, Introduction to Algebra, Algebra I, and Global Human Rights. Thursdays—Biology, Computers for Career & College, Creative Writing, and Energy & Motion. Limited scholarships are available thanks to the generous support of the Exeter Rotary Club and Exeter Lion’s Club.
