Vigil Held for Rye Student Who Died Overseas

More than 100 Bates College students gathered on the school's campus on Monday.

Bates College held a vigil on Monday for Rye native John Durkin, who was found dead in Rome, Italy last week.

WGME-TV in Maine said more than 100 Bates students attended Monday's private vigil, held on the campus of the college. Durkin was a student at the school and a linebacker on the football team. "It was pretty touching, hundreds and hundreds of people here and  everyone got a candle and we circled around the field, it was really, really nice," Bates sophomore Jed Quint told the television station.

Durkin reportedly died when he was hit by a train on Thursday morning. He was in Italy as part of the Trinity College Program in Rome. No information has been released yet about Durkin's funeral arrangements or local services.
