Should Exeter Hire an Economic Development Director?

The job would pay between $55,000 and $75,000 a year.

The Board of Selectmen has been moving forward with a plan to hire an economic development director to help attract new businesses to Exeter.

The job would pay between $55,000 and $75,000 a year, according to Town Manager Russ Dean.

He pointed to the recent closure of Stop & Shop. An economic development director would help recruit new businesses.

Several area communities, including Portsmouth and Rochester, have economic development positions.

"If Exeter funded it, the town would be able to fulfill economic development initiatives faster," Dean said.

"I'm in favor of this position," Selectman Dan Chartrand said. "We need to grow our commercial real estate tax base to reduce our reliance on residential."

The Budget Committee will review the plan and report back to Selectmen.
