Newmarket Public Library happenings

Live
music in downtown Newmarket? Of
course. This summer the Newmarket Public Library is pleased to announce the
first summer music series at the Bandstand, Fridays at 7 p.m. Library Summer Music Series at the Bandstand performers
include - Sylvan Roots  on July 25. An
acoustic trio playing well-known and more obscure roots music of the folk and
blues tradition.  Finger style rhythm guitar, 5-string banjo, percussion and vocals. On August 1, Nice & Naughty will perform. Its original music speaks to all aspects of everyday life, from
whimsical to poignant, serious to silly. Accompanied by stand-up bass, guitar
and pennywhistle, their exquisite harmonies are the highlight of their
performance.

This year’s summer reading program is in full
swing. On Tuesday, July 29 at 10:30 AM: Bats! Friends in the Night Sky. The Center for Wildlife from Cape Neddick, Maine presents a program integrating ecology and natural
history about bats, the only flying mammal that uses sonar technology and eats

1000 mosquitoes per hour! The summer storytimes for Fizz Boom Read are Tuesdays
at 10:30
a.m. for children ages three to five and Tuesdays at 3 p.m. for children ages five to twelve. Participants are encouraged to keep a reading
log. There will be an end of session pizza party, complete with prizes, on Aug.
6 at 6
p.m. with pizza donated
by Jeremy’s Pizza (Newmarket). The grand prize is passes for four to Water
Country.

This year the library is also hosting a summer reading program for teens - For teens ages 12/13 to 17: Spark a Reaction! For each book, graphic novel or audiobook you read, submit a brief book review online OR write your name and a short review on a review slip available at the library. Adults can even join in with the adult summer reading program, Literary Elements. Adults can submit a review for every book they read. Both teens and adults must submit reviews by Aug. 5 to be eligible for a prize drawing on Aug. 6.


The free movie program continues with special reading-themed

offerings to correspond with the summer program. Thursday, July 24 at 6 p.m.: A college professor invents an anti-gravity
substance and must protect it from a corrupt businessman (92 minutes,
approved). July 31 at 6 p.m. – an animated sequel to a popular movie tells the story of two blue
macaws, Blu and Jewel, who are raising a family in the Amazon after leaving the
safety of Rio de Janeiro (101 minutes, rated G).

The Books & Coffee Adult book discussion group continues on July 25 at 10:30. This month’s selection is “Thinking Fast and Slow” by David Kahnenan (non-fiction).  

If you’re looking to find out your family history, the library now offers access to Ancestry.com. The genealogical database provides information on census reports, vital records, immigration and military records. It can only be accessed from the library.


     If you’d like some help learning new
technologies, one on one tutoring is available for computers or E-readers. Just
call or come in to make an appointment.

Looking for an economical day out with the family? The library has four museum passes – the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester http://www.currier.org/ and Seacoast Science Center in Rye http://www.seacoastsciencecenter.org/, Children’s Museum in Dover http://www.childrens-museum.org/cmnh2010/ and See Science Center in Manchester http://www.see-sciencecenter.org/

If you would like to get involved in something and love the library, think about joining the Friends of the Newmarket Public Library. The next meeting will be Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. And the next book sale, hosted by the Friends of Newmarket Public Library, will be Aug. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.

And a reminder, the library is on summer hours for July and August, closing at 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
