The infant reportedly suffered several broken bones.

Two area residents were arrested Wednesday on assault charges connected to an alleged abuse case involving their 1-month old infant.

Christine Tumulty, 34, of 76 South Main St., Newton is charged with second degree assault. Allen T. Rockwood, 32, also of 76 South Main St., Newton is charged with two counts of second degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child/incompetent. Newton Police Chief Larry Streeter said Tumulty and Rockwood are the baby's biological parents.

On Oct. 21, the Newton Police Department received a report of potential abuse of a 1-month old infant from the New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth and Families. The child reportedly had several broken bones at various levels of healing. At that time, Newton Police began an investigation, which was assisted by the Rockingham County Attorneys Office and other local departments and agencies.

The infant remains in the custody of NHDCYF.

Additional charges may be forthcoming from the Rockingham County Attorney's Office.
