Big News in Ioka Revival Plan

A group has laid out goals.

A group charged with reviving the Ioka theater has laid out some ambitious plans.

The nonprofit Exeter Theater Company, run by several community leaders, sent out its first e-mail to supporters today since Kensington philantropist Alan Lewis at an auction earlier this month with the intention of returning it to its roots as a community theater.

The company says it wants to renovate the Ioka in an Art Deco fashion, preserving its historic features while getting it up code regarding safety standards. It added it's considering showcasing the following acts for the Ioka's reopening:

  • Theater
  • Dance
  • Comedy
  • Independent films
  • Various community programming

The company has set a goal of getting 1,000 people to join its donor program by March 31, 2012. People who donate money may get in return their names on a wall in the lobby, theater seats, and plaques. More information can be found on the group's website. It also started a Facebook page.
