Acorn School to Host Back to School Social and Comedy Night at Portsmouth Gaslight

PORTSMOUTH — Celebrate “Back to School” with Acorn School from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. Acorn School is holding its annual Back to School Social and Comedy Night at the Portsmouth Gaslight. In addition to the exciting silent and live auctions, this year’s social will also have the local talented comedian, Jimmy Dunn.

The Acorn School isn’t your typical pre-K and kindergarten. Launched in 1972, Acorn has remained steadfast in its efforts to maintain a low student-to-teacher ratio, one-on-one interaction, communication, and personal growth. The school uses its beautiful surroundings in Stratham to help forge a curriculum and philosophy aimed at stirring within its students an appreciation for the natural world.

Acorn touts an incredible, diverse curriculum, where finger painting and drawing meld seamlessly with Lego-building and sign language. From science to theater, world culture to creative arts, music to creative writing, no educational stone is left unturned.

The 100 students, ages 3 to 6, who attend Acorn School, come from as far away as Northern Massachusetts and Southern Maine, but mostly from nearby towns such as Stratham, Exeter, Newmarket, North Hampton, Hampton Falls, Greenland and Newfields.

The students spend a lot of time learning outside: composting, tending to the garden, visiting with animals, and walking nature trails. The school’s beautiful tree house is an outdoor classroom and a state-of-the-art tree-bound playroom, with a sturdy exterior slide and deck, which doubles as a bird observation area.

As for the Oct. 26 event, a can’t-miss opportunity, the silent and live auctions offer many desirable items that you can bid on. The silent auction will offer approximately 50 items on display, while there will be 15 items to choose from at the live auction.

The prizes are plentiful and include such things as four Bruins tickets hosted in Ray Bourque’s box with the Hall of Fame Bruin’s captain as your host, a Top Gun experience flying as a guest pilot in a military fighter aircraft, a season’s pass for ice cream from Memories Ice Cream, signed Boston sports memorabilia, a variety of facials and spa treatments, a kindle, iPad, vacation home packages, Newport and Boston packages and many other amazing items donated by wonderful friends and family of Acorn School.

This year’s fundraiser will be held in the Portsmouth Gaslight, a great venue for  Acorn families and alumni as well as the general public. The money raised will go toward Acorn School capital expenditures, and provide money for scholarships to students who otherwise may not be able to go to preschool.

The fundraiser will be a great chance for the community to come together and enjoy a great night filled with laughs and prizes.
