Exeter Principal Confident of Incident-Free Homecoming Dance

A dance ban was instituted earlier this year after students were found with drugs and alcohol at a "March Madness" dance.

Exeter High School Principal Sean Kiley said he's confident Saturday's homecoming dance will be free of conflicts that have plagued previous school dances.

In March, Kiley shut down the "March Madness" dance after several students were found with alcohol and drugs. A ban on dances was then instituted.

There will be 25 chaperones and several police officers at Saturday's dance, Kiley said.

"I believe in these kids," Kiley told the School Board Monday. "We're going to assume they're going to be doing the right thing."

Kiley said he spoke with students and said they've shown leadership in making sure the dance goes smoothly.

He said the number of dances this school year was cut by about 75 percent. Other dances scheduled for this year include the winter semi-formal and two proms.

"Studies have shown that the (dances) where the kids wear shirts and ties and dress up, there are (fewer) problems," he said.
