Exeter Loses Gerry's Variety Store Owner

Roland Goupil passed away last week.

Roland Goupil, the longtime owner of Gerry's Variety Store on Lincoln Street, died last week. He was 79 years old. Goupil purchased the store in 1966 and operated it until his death, according to his obituary. Goupil was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was raised in Dover and graduated Dover High School in 1950. Goupil died on May 1. Donations in his name can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or Exeter/Exeter Junior Baseball League, PO Box 471 , Exeter, NH 03833. He was buried at the Exeter Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Brittany M. Tibbetts

Berwick, Maine resident was killed in last week's Greenland shooting.

Brittany M. Tibbetts, of Berwick Maine died on April 13, 2012 at the age of 26. Brittany was a 2004 graduate of Noble High School and went on to attend 1 year at the University of Maine. She then turned her focus on her "True Dream" of becoming a Cosmetologist. She graduated from Empire Beauty School and began her career at Hair Excitement in Newington, NH, where she worked for 5 years. Recently she was preparing to open her own salon. She truly loved her career, the people she worked with and the friends she made along the way. Brittany was a very loving person who would help anyone in need. She loved her dog Diesel and her parent's cats. She enjoyed sports and won many softball awards. Her other passions were singing, snowmobiling and …

Greenland Police Chief's Wake Today

Funeral will be held at noon Thursday in Hampton.

The Remick and Gendron Funeral Home in Hampton published the obituary for Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney on Saturday. Maloney's wake will be held on Wednesday, April 18 at the funeral home. There will be a law enforcement walk through from 1 to 3:30 p.m., and a public visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Maloney's funeral will be held on Thursday, April 19, at noon on the Winnacunnet High School athletic field in Hampton, or in the WHS gymnasium in the case of inclement weather. Democratic Field for Governor to Expand

Exeter's Maggie Hassan will have another challenger.

The race for the Democratic nomination for governor will become a three-way one, according to multiple reports. WMUR's James Pindell and the Concord Monitor's Annmarie Timmins tonight reported Bill Kennedy, of Danbury, will enter the race. Pindell reported on his "Political Scoop" blog that Kennedy will announce his candidacy Thursday. Kennedy is a firefighter, EMT, and veteran, according to Pindell. Kennedy will go up against Exeter's Maggie Hassan and Barrington's Jackie Cilley in the September Primary. The filing period for the race closes in June. Timmins reported Kennedy – like Cilley – will not take "The Pledge" against a sales/income tax. Cilley said she will not play "pledge politics." Hassan has previously indicated she is taking …

Pease Site in Sig Sauer's Crosshairs Today

The Exeter-based gunmaker could strike a deal to expand.

Sig Sauer, one of the largest manufacturers in Exeter, may be expanding at the Pease Tradeport. The gunmaker has a tentative deal in place to lease a new space at 72 Pease Boulevard in Newington. Officials could approve it this morning during a special meeting of the Pease Development Authority. The meeting starts at 7:30 a.m. Check back here, as Exeter Patch will post details as soon as we get them. It's unclear if Sig Sauer would close its Exeter headquarters and move everything to Pease. Sig has operated out its Exeter factory since the early 1990s. It also has a shooting range in Epping. In NH, Newark Mayor Says It's Time for Dems to Fight Back

Cory Booker takes jabs at Romney, Christie at UNH stop.

In New Hampshire campaigning for President Obama on Friday, Newark Mayor Cory Booker fired a few jabs at Mitt Romney and his campaign surrogate, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Asked if he thinks now is the time to fight, as Obama recently stated, Booker replied that yes, sometimes that's the only way to get the message across. "I like to punish people with facts," Booker said. "They are irrefutable about what happened. I look at Mitt Romney's first ads – blatant lies. We can't let people get away with that." Jim Reardon, Former Exeter Council Member

He was 83 years old.

Jim Reardon, an Exeter resident who served in World War II and went on to work for NASA, passed away recently. Reardon was 83 years old, according to his obituary. He was a member of Exeter's Council on Aging at the time of his death, according to the town. He grew up in Dorchester, Mass. and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked as a tool maker for NASA and the Department of Defense, among other organizations. Reardon died Oct. 22. He was buried in Exeter Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Donita.
