NH Sequester Cuts Total Millions, White House Says

As sequestration looms March 1, the White House released a new report that totals more than $7 million in direct cuts and indirect consequences like 1,000 furloughs for civilian Defense employees. GOP says Obama relying too much on tax hikes.

What will the sequester mean for New Hampshire? Millions and millions of dollars and impacts to an array of popular service programs, according to the White House. In a move designed to pressure negotiators on Capitol Hill, the White House on Feb. 24 issued a state-by-state impact report of sequestration – the automatic cuts possible by March 1 – that includes 1,000 civilian Defense Department employees furloughed and a loss of $1 million for teachers and schools in New Hampshire. The "factsheet" listed some of the New Hampshire impacts; the items with a pricetag totaled $7.1 million. This comes as President Obama and Republican leaders in Congress try to resolve differences in ways to cut the deficit and, possibly, agree to various …

POLL: Is Now the Time for Immigration Reform?

Vote in our poll and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

President Obama came out Tuesday in support of overhauling U.S. immigration laws, saying "the time has come" to replace the "out of date" system. His speech in Las Vegas focused on three key points – improved enforcement of existing immigration laws, creating a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. and reforming the current immigration system. Obama's speech came a day after a bipartisan coalition of Senators introduced a framework for immigration reform. Previous attempts at immigration reform have failed in recent years, and this latest effort is expected to spark intense debate. What do you think? Do you agree with President Obama that "now's the time" for immigration reform? Or do you think this latest …

NH Dems Head to D.C. for Obama's Inauguration

A local high school band and numerous Granite State residents will be in Washington, D.C. for this weekend's festivities.

The Granite State will be well represented at President Obama's inauguration weekend in Washington, D.C. The Londonderry High Band will be marching in Monday's inaugural parade, and many other New Hampshire residents will be making the trip to our nation's capital to celebrate the start of Obama's second term. Obama's official inauguration is on Sunday, but the ceremonial swearing in that is open to the public will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, followed by the inaugural parade at 2:30 p.m. and the inaugural ball at 6 p.m. Amber Bargallo of Milford, who works at the New Hampshire Democratic Party, will also march in Monday's inaugural parade, carrying the New Hampshire banner. What Do You Think of Obama's Gun Control Measures?

President Obama spoke of 'consensus' on curbing gun violence. Share your thoughts in the comments field below.

President Obama today, a month after the Sandy Hook shooting, announced 23 executive actions designed to curb gun violence. He outlined steps to strengthen background checks for gun purchases and a campaign to promote responsible gun ownership. The 23 actions included requiring federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations, clarifying that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors from asking patients about guns in the home, and incentives for districts to hire school resource officers. Obama also called on Congress to back an assault weapons ban and restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines. Following the Connecticut shooting and ensuing public debate, the National Rifle Association pushed …

POLL: Fiscal Cliff: Who Bears the Blame of Stalemate?

Who's at fault if the president and congressional leaders fail to reach a deal in 72 hours?

The "fiscal cliff," the one-two punch of tax increases and spending cuts, is about 72 hours away as President Barack Obama and congressional leaders try to salvage proposals to avert the economic trouble at the start of the new year. Negotiations between House Speaker John Boehner and Obama, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have so far been fruitless. Politicians and economists warn of the fiscal cliff wallop to the economy if nothing is done. And in Washington, D.C., there's less optimism and more finger-pointing. From your perspective, who bears the blame if the nation veers off this fiscal cliff? And why? Take the poll below and tell us about your vote in the comments!

POLL: Will Hurricane Sandy Help Obama?

Vote in our poll, and share your thoughts in the comments field below.

A Washington Post/ABC poll released this week showed that 80 percent of voters feel President Obama has done a good job dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Even New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie – a staunch supporter of Mitt Romney – praised Obama's response to the storm, which devastated parts of New Jersey and New York and caused serious damage in many other states, including New Hampshire. Obama also received the endorsement of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday, with Bloomberg citing Obama's handling of Hurricane Sandy as one of the main reasons he decided to support the president. Meanwhile, Romney's previous pledge to abolish FEMA hasn't helped him in the wake of the storm. What do you think? Will Hurricane …

Nashua Rallies For Obama

The President was the main attraction, but how sweet it was having singer James Taylor along for the ride.

An estimated 8,500 Obama supporters fleshed out the grassy knoll in front of Elm Street School Saturday for a stop by President Obama. That number, provided by Nashua Fire Marshal Cynthia Bautista, could make this the largest political rally in New Hampshire history, beating Oprah/Obama in 2007, according to WMUR political analyst James Pindell. Justin Kates, Nashua's Director of Emergency Management said another 400 were turned away at the gate once the space was to capacity. Those who made it in got a reprieve from the usual canned musical campaign fare – opening for Obama was singer/songwriter James Taylor, who the Obama thanked for "hitting the campaign trail hard" over the past few months. Taylor arrived on stage about 1 p.m. and …

Obama in NH: 'Don't Boo' Romney, Just Vote

In return to battleground state, the president says four electoral votes are a key to victory.

It didn't take long for President Obama to go after his GOP presidential opponent Mitt Romney at a packed rally in Manchester, attacking what he called the former Massachusetts governor's "PowerPoint plan for the economy." Much of the crowd of about 6,000 streamed into Veteran's Park three hours early, anxious to hear the president's follow-up to what several Democrats in the audience called a successful debate on Tuesday. Obama sliced the five-point plan that Romney touted two days ago, repeating his comment from the debate that it is more like a "one-point plan." "Those at the top play with a different set of rules than you do," he said on the plan. "They can pay lower taxes, they can keep their money offshore, they can buy companies and…

Is President Obama's Foreign Policy 'Dangerous'?

Columnist says situation in Libya shows more must be done.

This President has gone from being incompetent to dangerous. It is bad enough that his primary foreign policy strategy for the past three and a half years has been “Look at me.  I am eloquent. I lived in a Muslim nation. Let’s all be friends.” And it is bad enough that his “let’s all be friends” policy has failed miserably. What makes it all intolerable – and incredibly dangerous – is his total lack of willingness to reevaluate and change course. Last week, the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens, was killed in an attack on the American Embassy in Benghazi. He was murdered, his body dragged through the streets, three other Americans killed, the American flag torn and burned. The President went to bed. Seriously. According to …

Smart phone app will send users an "exclusive notification."

With the Democratic and Republican contenders having been set for months, the national media has needed a new storyline. So for weeks now, we've been hearing about the seemingly endless choices for Mitt Romney's running mate. Will it be Marco Rubio, Condi Rice, or even New Hampshire's own Kelly Ayotte? Fortunately, there's a way to make sure you're among the first who find out when Romney does make his announcement – download the free "Mitt's VP app" that the Romney campaign unveiled last week.
