Economic Development Director for Exeter?

The Board of Selectmen is moving forward with plans to hire an economic development director to help attract new businesses to Exeter.

Selectmen earlier this month directed Town Manager Russ Dean to work up a job description for the new position for presentation during budget season. The goal would be for it to be a full-time position that would pay between $55,000 and $75,000 a year.

"Just last week a major employer in town announced its closing," Dean said, referencing the closure of Stop & Shop. "It begs the question, how is recruitment for a new replacement business going to happen and what role will the town play in that?"

Dean said several area communities, including Portsmouth and Rochester, already fund economic development positions aimed at recruiting new businesses and retaining existing ones.

Selectmen will discuss the issue at their meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at the Town Offices. The agenda can be found above.
